Les Misérables is heading to one of the world’s most recognizable venues, with Opera Australia announcing that Cameron Mackintosh’s production will make its Sydney Opera House debut in 2027.
The fully staged musical will open in the Joan Sutherland Theatre on August 27, 2027. It will mark the first time Les Misérables has played the Sydney Opera House and the first fully staged Australian production in more than a decade.
A milestone for the long-running musical
The Sydney season arrives 40 years after the show’s Australian premiere in 1987. Based on Victor Hugo’s novel, the musical has been seen by more than 150 million people around the world and remains one of musical theatre’s most enduring international successes.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said bringing the production to the Opera House was something he had wanted to do for years. The announcement follows the global success of the recent arena concert tour.
Priority ticket access begins October 27, with general public sales scheduled to start November 3, 2026. Casting for the Sydney season has not yet been detailed.
