Jamie Foxx is turning one of the most frightening chapters of his life into comedy with his new stand-up special, Jamie Foxx: Take Care of Yourself.
The 58-year-old Oscar winner has been speaking openly about the serious medical emergency he experienced three years ago, saying the experience changed his priorities and left him with a renewed sense of creative purpose. The new 59-minute special arrives on streaming October 7 and puts that perspective at the center of his return to stand-up.
Foxx says his health crisis changed his outlook
In a recent ABC News interview, Foxx reflected on how close he came to dying during the 2023 health emergency that led to hospitalization. He has previously revealed that the crisis involved a brain bleed that caused a stroke, followed by a long recovery that he initially kept largely private.
Now, Foxx says the experience has given him material he can share with audiences in a way that is both truthful and funny. Rather than approaching stand-up from the position of a star celebrating his accomplishments, he is using the stage to talk about fear, survival, recovery and what it means to keep moving after a life-altering event.
Foxx has also said he feels more creatively energized than he has in years, describing a sense of unfinished business following his recovery.
‘Take Care of Yourself’ marks a new chapter
The special, directed by Troy Miller, runs 59 minutes and is built around Foxx’s evolving perspective on life and self-care. Its title reflects a theme that has become increasingly important in his public comments since the medical emergency.
Foxx’s career has always crossed multiple lanes. He won an Academy Award for portraying Ray Charles in Ray, built a long film career spanning drama, action and comedy, released successful music and first became nationally known as a comedian and television performer.
Returning to stand-up therefore brings him back to one of the foundations of his career, but with material shaped by experiences his younger self could not have imagined.
Comedy becomes part of the recovery story
The new project is not the first time Foxx has used performance to discuss his health. He previously addressed the crisis in the 2024 Netflix special What Had Happened Was…, giving audiences a detailed account of the emergency and his recovery.
Take Care of Yourself moves the story forward. Instead of focusing only on what happened medically, the new special is positioned around what Foxx has learned since surviving it and how he is approaching the next phase of his life.
That makes the release more than another celebrity stand-up project. It is part of a continuing public comeback for a performer who disappeared from view during the most serious period of his recovery and has gradually returned to movies, television, music and live comedy.
For Foxx, the message behind the new chapter is straightforward: surviving a crisis can change what matters, and humor can be one way of processing the experience.
