The world of Crazy Rich Asians is officially expanding to television, with HBO ordering a new series that will reunite several of the 2018 movie’s biggest stars.
Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Ronny Chieng are set to return, bringing Rachel Chu, Nick Young, Eleanor and Eddie back for a new chapter. The project is planned as an eight-episode drama series, with production expected to begin in 2027.
Original Crazy Rich Asians cast returns
The television continuation ends years of uncertainty over how the hit romantic comedy franchise would move forward. The original film became a global success and helped turn its ensemble into internationally recognized stars.
Wu and Golding will again anchor the story as Rachel and Nick, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh returns as formidable family matriarch Eleanor. Ronny Chieng is also back as Eddie.
Adele Lim will lead the HBO series
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, is serving as showrunner and executive producer. Director Jon M. Chu, author Kevin Kwan and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also involved.
The move to an eight-hour television format could allow the adaptation to explore more of Kwan’s characters and social world than a single movie sequel could accommodate. HBO has not yet announced a premiere date.
Why the reunion is a big deal
Crazy Rich Asians earned roughly $239 million worldwide and became a landmark mainstream Hollywood release for Asian representation. Since then, Yeoh has won an Academy Award and other cast members have built major film and television careers.
The return of the original stars therefore gives HBO a recognizable ensemble while opening the door to new characters and storylines. After years of stalled sequel discussions, fans finally have a concrete continuation to look forward to.
