Idina Menzel is sharing a surprising detail from the early days of Rent: members of the original Broadway cast supplied much of the clothing audiences saw onstage from their own wardrobes.
During a New York Comic Con panel, Menzel looked back at the landmark 1996 production, in which she originated the role of Maureen Johnson.
Rent’s authentic early look
According to Menzel, the cast’s costumes came from their own closets, a detail that helps explain the production’s lived-in visual style. The musical became a defining Broadway work of its era, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The recollection offers a glimpse into the practical choices behind a show whose characters and New York setting were central to its identity.
Menzel revisits her Broadway beginnings
The actress and singer has remained closely associated with both Rent and Wicked, two productions that became major milestones in modern musical theater. Her NYCC comments focused on the beginnings of a career before she became internationally known as a Broadway star and the voice of Elsa in Frozen.
The original Rent cast has reunited at various points over the years, and Menzel’s latest story adds another behind-the-scenes detail to the show’s history.
