Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have officially stepped into the world of Miami Vice, with the first look at the stars in character arriving as filming begins on the upcoming big-screen reboot.
Variety reported on October 13 that Jordan plays undercover detective Ricardo Tubbs while Butler takes on the role of Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice ’85. The new film is inspired by the landmark 1980s television series.
Miami Vice returns to the mid-1980s
The original show starred Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs. The reboot will return to the style, glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami and draws inspiration from the pilot and first season of the original series.
Joseph Kosinski, whose recent directing credits include Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing. Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, with an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer.
A major ensemble joins Jordan and Butler
The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.
The project gives Jordan another major leading role following his recent success, while Butler continues a run of high-profile films. The first-look images signal that the production intends to embrace the visual identity that made the original Miami Vice a pop-culture phenomenon.
Universal has scheduled Miami Vice ’85 for theatrical release on May 19, 2028. With filming now underway, further character details and production updates are expected as the reboot moves forward.
