Toni Collette is preparing to direct her first feature film, marking a major new chapter in her acclaimed screen career.
Variety reported on October 13 that Collette will helm The Best Of, an adaptation of Graeme Simsion’s novel. The project is receiving support from Screen Australia and Screen NSW.
A new role behind the camera
The story follows two former romantic partners who reconnect after decades apart and discover that old feelings can bring both joy and complications back into their lives.
Collette has built an internationally recognised acting career through projects including Muriel’s Wedding, The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine, Hereditary and United States of Tara. Her move into feature directing gives the Emmy and Golden Globe winner a new creative role behind the camera.
Australian backing for The Best Of
Variety reports that Kismet will handle local distribution while Cornerstone will oversee international sales. The film was announced as part of a wider Screen Australia funding round supporting dozens of narrative projects.
The same funding announcement includes a television adaptation of Sarah Bailey’s The Dark Lake, starring Phoebe Tonkin. Screen Australia described the slate as a mix of established creators and emerging voices.
A production schedule, full cast and release date for The Best Of have not yet been announced, making those the next major details to watch as Collette prepares for her feature directing debut.
