Matthew Gray Gubler Brings Einstein to NYCC With Melissa Fumero and Tony Shalhoub

Matthew Gray Gubler returned to the fan-convention spotlight at New York Comic Con to introduce audiences to Einstein, his upcoming CBS crime drama with Melissa Fumero and Tony Shalhoub.

The NYCC presentation included a special screening and a conversation about the series, which casts Gubler as Lewis Einstein, the fictional great-grandson of Albert Einstein. The character is a brilliant but unconventional Princeton professor whose behavior lands him in trouble with police.

A new role after Criminal Minds

Rather than returning to familiar procedural territory as Spencer Reid, Gubler is taking on a very different kind of genius. Lewis is paired with Detective Teri London, played by Fumero, as the two tackle unusual cases.

Shalhoub plays Lewis’ father, Jack Einstein, adding another high-profile name to the CBS series. The Comic Con appearance offered fans one of their first opportunities to hear the cast discuss the show’s mix of mystery, humor and character-driven storytelling.

Gubler returns to network television

The project has attracted particular attention because of Gubler’s long association with Criminal Minds. His move into a new CBS lead role gives the actor another eccentric problem-solver to play while establishing a separate identity from Spencer Reid.

Einstein is expected to premiere in early 2027.
