Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while director Matt Reeves steps away to focus on a family matter, according to a statement from Warner Bros. and DC Studios.
The highly anticipated sequel had been filming in London with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne. The studio said Reeves has its full support and that it looks forward to continuing production, but no exact restart date has been announced.
The pause is the latest change in a long development journey for the follow-up to 2022’s The Batman, though the current interruption is specifically tied to Reeves’ personal circumstances.
Robert Pattinson returns to Gotham
Pattinson will again lead the cast, with Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis among the returning performers. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.
Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin and is directing and producing the sequel. His Gotham universe has already expanded through HBO’s The Penguin, which continued Colin Farrell’s story as Oz Cobb.
Release remains set for 2028
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for theatrical release on February 18, 2028. The film has moved on the calendar several times during development, and it is not yet clear whether the temporary production pause will affect that date.
For now, the studio’s statement emphasizes support for Reeves rather than a change in the movie’s creative direction. Fans will be watching for confirmation that filming has resumed once the director is ready to return.
