Matthew Lillard is looking back candidly at the complicated relationship he once had with the live-action Scooby-Doo movies that made his Shaggy performance a fan favorite.
The actor said his expectations soared after the first film became a major release, but his career slowed sharply around the time 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed arrived. For years, he associated the franchise with that difficult professional period.
Lillard says the experience ultimately humbled him
With distance, Lillard says he came to understand that the shift had more to do with aging out of the young-man roles he had played for years than with Shaggy itself. He now views the period as an important reset that helped him embrace his strengths as a character actor.
The slowdown also created financial pressure. Lillard said he and his wife eventually sold their home and cars and downsized their lifestyle. At the same time, he emphasized that the money he earned from the second Scooby-Doo film helped his family through that transition.
Shaggy became one of his signature roles
Despite those complicated feelings, Lillard continued voicing Shaggy in animated projects and became closely associated with the character. His later career included acclaimed supporting work in films and television, including The Descendants and Twin Peaks.
Today, the actor describes the difficult chapter with more gratitude than resentment, saying the experience changed how he viewed fame, success and his place in Hollywood.
